How Vehicle Contact Can Injure a Cyclist’s Legs
Bicyclists have little protection when struck by a larger vehicle. Their legs may absorb force from the bumper, hood, pavement, or bicycle frame during a wreck. This can lead to fractures involving the knee, thigh, shin, or ankle.
Being thrown from a bicycle can create a second point of contact. A rider may first be hit by the vehicle and then land hard on the road. Twisting during the fall can place added stress on bones and joints.
Medical teams may use X-rays or other imaging to determine the type and extent of a fracture. Treatment depends on where the break occurs and whether nearby muscles, nerves, or blood vessels are affected. Some leg fractures require surgery, while others may be treated with a cast, brace, or limited movement.
