Tulsa, OK (July 27, 2026) – A semi-truck and at least one other vehicle were involved in a collision on eastbound I-44 near South Yale Avenue on the afternoon of July 25, causing major traffic delays and leaving a light pole knocked down in the median.

The crash was reported at about 2:30 p.m. near the 5200 block east of I-44. Emergency units worked to manage traffic while crews cleared the vehicles, removed debris, and addressed the damaged light pole. Eastbound lanes reopened gradually before the roadway was fully opened to traffic. The involved parties were assessed for injuries at the scene.

Drivers were advised to avoid the stretch of interstate during the cleanup and use East Skelly Drive as an alternate route. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is examining what led to the crash.

The cause of the collision remains under review as investigators continue gathering information.

We hope everyone involved remains safe and unharmed.

Why Downed Light Poles Can Extend Highway Closures After a Crash

When a highway crash damages roadside infrastructure such as light poles, cleanup often takes longer than simply removing the vehicles involved. Utility equipment may need to be inspected to determine whether electrical hazards exist before repair crews can safely begin work.

A fallen light pole can also block travel lanes or medians, requiring traffic control while heavy equipment removes damaged materials. Debris scattered across the roadway must be cleared to reduce risks for other drivers before lanes reopen. In some cases, engineers inspect nearby structures or electrical connections to confirm they remain stable. These additional steps help restore normal traffic flow while reducing hazards for motorists traveling through the affected roadway.
