Mountain View, HI (June 18, 2026) – A fatal motorcycle crash occurred on South Glenwood Road in Mountain View, claiming the life of a 24-year-old Hilo man.
According to first responders, the wreck was reported at about 12:51 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16. Preliminary findings indicate that a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle was traveling makai and passing several vehicles in a no-passing zone while approaching a blind hill.
The rider entered the opposing lane and collided head-on with a mauka-bound 2014 Mazda sedan. Tyler Napoleon, 24, of Hilo, was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he later died at 5:49 a.m. An autopsy has been ordered to determine his exact cause of death.
The 43-year-old Volcano man driving the Mazda was not hurt. Investigators believe speed and reckless driving contributed to the collision. They also reported that Napoleon was not wearing a helmet at the time. The cause of the crash remains under review as investigators continue gathering information.
We share our heartfelt sympathies with Tyler Napoleon’s family and friends during this difficult time.
Why Passing Zones and Road Visibility Matter for Motorcyclists
Passing zones are designed to provide enough sight distance for drivers and riders to safely overtake slower traffic. Areas marked as no-passing zones usually contain hills, curves, or other features that limit visibility and make it difficult to see approaching vehicles.
Motorcycles can accelerate quickly, which may create a false sense of available space when attempting to pass. However, blind hills and obstructed views can significantly reduce reaction time for everyone on the road. Even a brief move into an opposing lane can create a dangerous situation when oncoming traffic is nearby.
Road markings, posted signs, and visibility conditions are all factors that riders should consider before attempting to pass. Following these traffic controls helps reduce the risk of serious roadway collisions and improves safety for all travelers.
