Winston-Salem, NC (June 10, 2026) – One person lost their life after a pedestrian crash along Highway 52 in Winston-Salem shortly after midnight on Wednesday, June 10.
According to reports, a driver was traveling northbound on Highway 52 beneath the Liberty Street Bridge when their vehicle struck a person on the roadway. The 71-year-old man was pronounced dead at the site of the fatal encounter.
The deceased was identified as Harold Bost. Investigators said he was wearing dark clothing at the time, and it remains unclear why he was in the travel lanes. The motorist stayed on the roadway and continued cooperating with investigators.
The roadway closure affected both directions of Highway 52 between Liberty Street and Akron Drive for several hours. Traffic has since resumed through the corridor. Investigators are still working to determine the circumstances that led to the fatality.
Our hearts go out to Harold Bost’s family and friends during this difficult time.
Why Are Pedestrian Fatalities More Likely on High-Speed Highways?
Pedestrian deaths are more common on highways and other high-speed roads because drivers have less time to react when someone is in a travel lane. At higher speeds, stopping distances increase significantly, making it more difficult to avoid a person on foot, especially during overnight hours or in areas with limited lighting.
Visibility can also be a factor. Dark clothing, weather conditions, roadway design, and the absence of pedestrian crossings may reduce a driver’s ability to see someone ahead in time. Many highway corridors are designed primarily for vehicle travel and often lack sidewalks or safe walking routes. As a result, pedestrians who enter these roadways face a greater risk of serious harm. Safety experts often encourage the use of reflective clothing and designated crossing points whenever available to improve visibility and reduce risk.
