What Information Is Reviewed After a Pedestrian Crash?
Pedestrian crashes are usually reviewed by examining the roadway, traffic conditions, vehicle movements, and visibility at the time of the collision. Investigators may consider whether the person was crossing, walking along the road, or entering traffic. Lighting and clothing can also be relevant when visibility is a factor.
Vehicle damage and marks on the pavement may help establish where contact occurred. Photos, witness accounts, traffic signals, and nearby video footage can provide additional information. Weather and road conditions may also be considered when available.
For pedestrians, visibility can be especially important at night. Wearing reflective or bright clothing and using marked crossings can make it easier for drivers to see people near traffic. Drivers should also remain alert for pedestrians, particularly near intersections and other areas where people may cross.
