Modesto, CA (June 11, 2026) – One person lost their life after a vehicle being pursued by troopers entered a Modesto house early Tuesday, June 9.
Emergency units were called to Robin Hood Drive near Tuxford Lane shortly before 1:30 a.m. after flames were reported at the residence. Investigators later confirmed a driver refused to stop for a traffic enforcement attempt before entering the home.
The driver was identified as 20-year-old Zachariah Knobel, who was suspected of driving under the influence. He was taken into custody and booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on multiple felony charges. A female passenger, identified as an 18-year-old woman, was removed from the vehicle and released to her mother nearby.
Initial reports stated two people had died inside the house. Later updates confirmed that only one person was killed. Neighbors said the homeowners were away at the time, and the deceased person was believed to be staying there temporarily. Their identity had not been released as of Tuesday afternoon.
Residents nearby described hearing a loud noise overnight before seeing smoke outside the property. Robin Hood Drive and Tuxford Lane remained closed for several hours on Tuesday morning while crews worked in the neighborhood.
The cause of the pursuit and the circumstances leading up to the fire remain under review.
We extend heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the person who died.
What Factors Are Often Examined After a Pursuit-Related Fatal Crash?
After a fatal roadway emergency involving a police pursuit, investigators commonly examine several details to better understand how the chain of events unfolded. This may include reviewing vehicle speed, road conditions, visibility, and whether traffic signals or warning signs were present nearby. Video footage from nearby homes, businesses, or dashboard cameras can also help establish a timeline.
Vehicle damage is commonly documented to determine how the fire or structural damage occurred after the vehicle entered the residence. Toxicology testing may also become part of the review process when impairment is suspected. In some cases, investigators examine communication records and the duration of the pursuit to better understand decisions made before the vehicle left the roadway. Information gathered during these reviews can take days or weeks to fully confirm.
