What Factors Are Typically Examined After a Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash in Virginia
When a vehicle strikes a fixed object like a guardrail, investigators look at several factors to piece together what led to the crash. Speed is one of the first things examined, since traveling above the posted limit reduces a driver’s ability to maintain control, especially on curving or uneven road surfaces. Physical evidence from the road, including skid marks, tire tracks, and the point of contact on the guardrail, helps establish how fast the vehicle was moving and at what angle it struck.
Alcohol and other substances are also routinely considered in fatal crashes, even when speed appears to be the primary factor. Toxicology results, which typically take several weeks to process, can either confirm or rule out impairment as a contributing cause. In Virginia, both speeding and driving while impaired carry serious legal consequences, and either finding can significantly affect the direction of the investigation.
