Downers Grove, IL (July 29, 2026) – One worker lost their life, and another was rescued after both became trapped inside a storm sewer during severe thunderstorms in Downers Grove on Monday, July 27. The workers were employed by Houston-based Vortex Lining Systems, which was performing rehabilitation work on a large storm sewer beneath the village’s downtown business district.
Emergency units located one worker about 200 feet from the original entry point near Curtiss and Washington Streets. The person was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and was reported to be in good condition. The second worker remained missing overnight as crews expanded the search downstream after determining floodwaters may have carried the person through the sewer system.
The missing worker was found near Washington Street at approximately 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, and was pronounced dead. Police were first alerted to the emergency at about 12:50 p.m. Monday after construction workers reported that two contractors were trapped below ground in the 800 block of Curtiss Street. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
The circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain under review as investigators continue gathering information.
