Why Are Interstate Crashes Involving Large Trucks Often More Severe?
Crashes involving large commercial trucks can result in severe outcomes because of the significant size and weight differences between trucks and passenger vehicles. Even at highway speeds, the force generated during contact can cause extensive vehicle damage and increase the likelihood of serious harm to occupants of smaller vehicles.
Interstate highways also present unique challenges. Vehicles typically travel at higher speeds, leaving drivers with less time to react to sudden traffic changes, roadway hazards, or unexpected maneuvers. Visibility, stopping distance, weather conditions, and traffic density can all influence how quickly a driver can avoid danger.
Following a serious roadway crash, investigators often review vehicle positions, roadway evidence, traffic patterns, and other available information to better understand what occurred. As additional facts become available, a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding the collision may emerge.
