Why Lane Departure Crashes Can Be So Dangerous
Lane departure crashes may occur when a vehicle leaves its travel lane and enters oncoming traffic or leaves the roadway entirely. These types of crashes can happen for many reasons, including driver distraction, fatigue, medical emergencies, poor weather, or attempts to avoid obstacles.
When a vehicle crosses into opposing traffic, the closing speed between vehicles can be significant, increasing the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities. Even on rural roads with lower traffic volumes, lane-departure collisions can result in serious outcomes because drivers have little time to react.
Investigators typically review roadway conditions, vehicle damage, witness statements, and other available evidence to better understand how a vehicle left its lane. Information gathered during this process can help provide a clearer picture of the sequence of events and contribute to roadway safety efforts.
