Wichita, KS (August 20, 2026) – A 61-year-old man died after being found unresponsive inside a pipe at a construction site near Riverside Park on August 18.
The man was found at 1401 W. Museum Blvd. around 2:55 p.m. after he had been welding at the site. Emergency units took him to a hospital, where he later died. The victim was identified as Mark Scott of Derby, Kansas; he was working as a subcontractor through the City of Wichita.
Preliminary findings indicate that Scott had been welding before he was found unresponsive. Electrocution is suspected, but the medical examiner will determine the final cause and manner of death.
There was no trench collapse involved, according to police. Another employee was also reportedly taken to a hospital with injuries. The circumstances surrounding the welding accident remain under investigation as officials work to determine what led to Scott’s death.
