Barstow, TX (July 21, 2026) – A chain-reaction collision involving 11 vehicles left one person dead on I-20 in Ward County.
The collision happened on July 19 at about 4:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 51. Five vehicles traveling westbound, including some towing additional vehicles, were involved.
A Freightliner semi-truck failed to control its speed and struck the rear of a vehicle being towed by a Nissan Rogue. The collision then spread to the other vehicles in the group.
Multiple vehicles caught fire, and several people were injured. A passenger in a Ford F-250 later died from injuries related to the wreck. The victim was identified as Bryan Alejandro Peinado, 20, of Midland.
The Freightliner driver was taken to Reeves County Hospital with minor injuries. The investigation into the cause of the collision is continuing.
