Why U-Turn Maneuvers Can Increase the Risk of Roadway Crashes
U-turns can be challenging because they require drivers to judge traffic coming from multiple directions while also making a wide turning movement. Even on roads with moderate traffic, a misjudgment of speed or distance can quickly create a dangerous situation.
Larger vehicles, including garbage trucks, may require additional space and time to stop or change direction. Their size can also make it harder for drivers of smaller vehicles to anticipate movement patterns. For that reason, transportation safety experts often encourage motorists to make U-turns only where they are clearly permitted and when there is sufficient visibility in both directions.
Road conditions, traffic volume, and driver awareness can all influence whether a turning maneuver is completed safely. Careful observation and patience remain key factors in reducing the likelihood of roadway crashes involving turning vehicles.
