What Is a Collision Reconstruction Investigation?
When a fatal roadway crash occurs, specially trained reconstruction specialists may be assigned to determine how the collision happened. These investigations may involve examining vehicle damage, measuring tire marks, reviewing roadway evidence, and analyzing the final positions of the vehicles.
Investigators may also collect electronic data from vehicles, review witness statements, and evaluate environmental factors such as lighting and road conditions. In cases involving serious injuries or loss of life, the process can take time because each piece of evidence must be carefully reviewed.
The findings from a reconstruction investigation help establish a clearer picture of the sequence of events leading up to the crash. Early reports often provide only basic details while specialists continue gathering and analyzing information.
