Vernon, IL (September 3, 2026) – One person was hurt on Tuesday afternoon, September 2, when a van collided with a semi-trailer on US 51 near E Lair St in Vernon. The van was traveling northbound behind the semi as the truck was turning east onto E Lair St.
The van failed to reduce speed before striking the semi and then caught fire, becoming fully engulfed. The van driver was taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of injuries.
A passenger in the van and the semi-truck driver were not hurt. Emergency units also worked to extinguish the vehicle fire. The cause of the accident remains under review as more details are gathered.
