Albuquerque, NM (September 2, 2026) – An Albuquerque police officer was injured on Tuesday morning, September 1, when a marked police unit and another car collided at California Ave and Cochiti St in the War Zone.

The wreck occurred around 11 a.m., while the officer was en route to another call after leaving a previous one. Albuquerque Fire Rescue checked both drivers, and no one was taken to a hospital from the location, according to the initial report.

Albuquerque Police Communications Director Gilbert Gallegos said the officer was leaving one call and beginning to respond to another when another vehicle struck the police unit on its side. Gallegos said the officer was injured and was receiving treatment.

Witnesses offered a different account. One witness claimed the officer was traveling quickly through the intersection without emergency lights activated and that the other driver was already halfway through the intersection. The police unit and the white car both suffered extensive damage.

The cause of the accident remains under review as officials work to establish what led to the collision.

Our thoughts are with the injured officer and everyone affected as they recover.

What Is Typically Reviewed After an Intersection Crash?

Intersection crashes can involve several factors, including traffic signals, right-of-way, vehicle positions, and driver actions. Investigators may examine photographs showing vehicle damage and the positions of the cars after the wreck.

Witness accounts can also provide details about what drivers were doing immediately beforehand. Dashcam footage, nearby surveillance video, and traffic signal records may offer additional information when available.

Vehicle damage can help show where the cars made contact and how the vehicles moved afterward. Investigators may also review road markings, visibility, weather, and lighting conditions.

When emergency vehicles are involved, records may also show whether warning lights or sirens were active at the time. These details can be compared with statements from drivers and witnesses to build a clearer account of what happened.
