Why Chain-Reaction Crashes Are Common on Highway Ramps
Rear-end and multi-vehicle collisions frequently occur on highway ramps due to merging traffic, sudden speed changes, and limited reaction time. When one vehicle slows or stops unexpectedly, following drivers may not have sufficient distance to avoid a collision, leading to a cascading series of collisions.
Investigators typically review braking distance, traffic flow, driver attention, and roadway conditions to determine contributing factors. Even in cases with minor injuries, authorities often conduct follow-up analysis to prevent similar incidents in high-traffic merge zones.
