York County, SC (August 11, 2026) – A Rock Hill man died and another person was hurt early Sunday morning, August 9, in a rollover collision on an Interstate 77 exit ramp. James Conner, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene around 3 a.m.

Conner was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado southbound at Exit 82 when it struck a guardrail and overturned, according to police and the York County Coroner.

A 20-year-old passenger in the truck, who has not been identified, was taken to Piedmont Medical Center for treatment. That person’s condition was not known.

This is the second fatality at Exit 82 this year. A woman died there in February when a car leaving the highway went airborne and struck the minivan she was driving.

The wreck remains under investigation. Our condolences go out to Conner’s family and loved ones, and we hope for a full recovery for the passenger.

Why Do Exit Ramps See So Many Rollover Crashes?

Exit ramps with tight curves can be especially challenging late at night, when fewer cars are on the road and a driver may feel more comfortable taking a curve faster than conditions allow. A vehicle that catches a guardrail at an angle rather than head-on can sometimes flip rather than come to a controlled stop.

Guardrails are designed to redirect a vehicle back onto the roadway or slow it gradually, but they aren’t always effective at every speed or angle of contact. A driver traveling too fast for a ramp’s curve can overwhelm the barrier’s design limits, leading to a rollover instead of the intended redirection.

When a location sees more than one fatality in a short period, transportation officials sometimes review the site for potential design changes, such as adjusted signage, rumble strips, or a modified curve radius. These reviews can take time, since they typically involve studying prior incident data, traffic volume, and the physical layout of the ramp itself.
