Oklahoma City, OK (September 7, 2026) – One person was killed and another was injured Saturday, September 5, after a crash on southbound I-35 in Oklahoma City.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a car driven by 34-year-old woman struck another vehicle from behind in the far-right southbound lane just before the 15th Street exit. The woman’s vehicle then left the roadway to the right, traveled down an embankment, crossed one set of railroad tracks and struck a freight car on another set of tracks. The other vehicle came to rest on the shoulder of I-35.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in her vehicle was transported to OU Medical Center for treatment. Numerous emergency responders were called to the area, and the crash caused traffic backups on the southbound side of the interstate.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim following this tragic crash. Our thoughts are also with the injured passenger, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
What Should Drivers Know About Rear-End Crashes?
Rear-end crashes happen when one driver does not have enough time or space to respond to slowing or stopped traffic. Following too closely can reduce the amount of time available to brake, particularly when traffic conditions change suddenly. Maintaining a reasonable following distance gives drivers more time to recognize hazards and react safely.
Drivers should also keep their attention focused on traffic ahead rather than relying only on the vehicle directly in front of them. Looking several vehicles ahead can provide an earlier warning when traffic begins to slow. Distractions such as phones, navigation systems, or other activities can delay a driver’s response and increase the risk of a collision.
Highway driving requires additional awareness because vehicles are traveling at higher speeds and conditions can change quickly. Drivers should adjust their speed to traffic, weather, and roadway conditions and remain alert near exits and merging areas. Wearing a seat belt on every trip can also help reduce the severity of injuries when a crash occurs.
