What Should Pedestrians Know About Walking Near Traffic?
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable when sharing roads with motor vehicles because they have little physical protection in a crash. Staying alert and using designated sidewalks and crossings when available can help reduce the risk of being struck. Pedestrians should also remain aware of vehicles that may be turning or approaching from unexpected directions.
Visibility is particularly important during early morning, evening, or nighttime hours. Wearing bright or reflective clothing can make pedestrians easier for drivers to see, especially in areas with limited lighting. Avoiding distractions such as looking at a phone while crossing can also help pedestrians notice approaching vehicles.
Drivers also play an important role in preventing pedestrian crashes. Motorists should reduce their speed near crosswalks, intersections, and areas where pedestrians are likely to be present. Checking carefully for people before turning or proceeding through a crossing can provide additional time to react to someone entering the roadway.
