Ontario, CA (September 9, 2026) – A motorist was critically hurt after a multi-vehicle crash on the westbound 10 Freeway near Etiwanda Avenue on Monday morning. The crash happened shortly before 2 a.m. and involved as many as six vehicles.

The chain-reaction collision reportedly began when a van and a car collided. Other vehicles became involved, leaving wrecked vehicles across the westbound lanes. A pickup truck overturned onto its side, and at least one motorist had to be freed from a vehicle.

Emergency units completely closed the westbound freeway as they worked at the scene. One person was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Rain had fallen in the region earlier Sunday, though it was unclear whether wet roads contributed to the crash. The circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation.

We hope for a full recovery for the person who was critically hurt.

What Makes Chain-Reaction Crashes Dangerous?

Chain-reaction crashes can develop quickly when one collision creates hazards for approaching motorists. A stopped vehicle, debris, or an overturned vehicle may leave drivers with little time to react.

Following at a safe distance gives you more time to brake when traffic suddenly slows. Drivers should also maintain a speed that allows them to stop safely within the distance they can see ahead.

Poor visibility and wet pavement can make these situations more difficult. Rain can reduce tire traction and increase stopping distance, especially when drivers travel too quickly for road conditions.

When a roadway becomes obstructed, avoiding sudden steering movements is also important. Abrupt lane changes can create additional conflicts with nearby vehicles. Staying focused, reducing speed as conditions worsen, and leaving adequate space can help lower the risk of a secondary collision.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
