Encinitas, CA (September 14, 2026) – One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash early Saturday, September 12, on northbound Interstate 5 near Leucadia in Encinitas. The California Highway Patrol initially reported the incident as a traffic collision with an ambulance en route, but later confirmed a fatality.
The crash was first reported around 2:58 a.m. in the HOV and No. 1 lanes. A dark-colored SUV was stopped in the No. 1 lane with its hazard lights on when another vehicle struck it. CHP later reported that at least three vehicles were involved, with one vehicle facing the wrong way in the HOV lane and another striking a pole. Debris was scattered across multiple lanes.
CHP reported one confirmed fatality at approximately 3:19 a.m. and indicated that there was a possibility of an additional fatality. A SIG Alert was issued, and northbound I-5 was temporarily shut down near Leucadia while crews responded, investigated, and cleared the roadway.
