Wauwatosa, WI (July 27, 2026) – A 21-year-old woman was left with life-threatening injuries after a wrong-way driver caused a rollover on North Mayfair Road near Menomonee River Parkway shortly before midnight on July 25.

According to investigators, a 911 caller reported that a Ford F-250 traveling in the northbound lanes in the wrong direction sideswiped another vehicle before the pickup overturned. The driver, a 46-year-old man from Eagle, Wisconsin, fled on foot before emergency units arrived.

Police later located the man at a hospital, where he allegedly kicked nursing staff and resisted officers before being taken into custody. He was booked into the Milwaukee County Criminal Justice Facility and is facing four charges, including suspected operating while intoxicated. The woman who was seriously hurt remained hospitalized, while no additional injuries were immediately reported.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the rollover is continuing as more information becomes available.

We send our best wishes to everyone affected and hope the injured woman makes a full recovery.

What Can Lead to Wrong-Way Crashes?

Wrong-way crashes usually occur when a driver enters a roadway using the wrong entrance or travels against the normal flow of traffic. These collisions can be especially severe because vehicles are often moving toward each other at highway speeds. Factors such as alcohol impairment, poor visibility, driver confusion, and unfamiliar roads are frequently reviewed after these types of crashes.

Investigators may also examine roadway signs, lighting, vehicle damage, and witness statements to better understand how the sequence of events unfolded. Information gathered during the review can help explain the circumstances of the crash and may contribute to future efforts to improve roadway safety.
