Warren, OH (June 24, 2026) – A 10-year-old boy was injured on Sunday morning when an electric bicycle and a fire truck collided at an intersection in Warren.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Nevada Avenue and Union Street on Sunday, June 22. According to a police report, the child was riding an electric bike westbound on Union Street when he failed to stop or slow at a stop sign. A fire truck was traveling northbound on Nevada Avenue when the two entered the intersection at the same time.

A city surveillance camera recorded the roadway encounter. Firefighters immediately exited the truck and provided first aid before the boy was taken to St. Joe’s Emergency Room for treatment of visible injuries.

Investigators said the child was cited for causing the accident. Statements included in the report indicated the fire truck driver attempted to brake but was unable to avoid contact. Police had not provided an update on the boy’s medical status as of yet.

The investigation into the collision remains active as additional details are reviewed. We hope the young rider experiences a smooth and complete recovery.

Why are Intersections Challenging for E-Bike Riders?

Electric bicycles have become increasingly common in many communities because they offer a convenient way to travel short distances. However, riders must follow the same traffic laws that apply to bicycles and, in many cases, other roadway users. Intersections can be especially demanding because riders must monitor traffic signals, signs, oncoming traffic, and cross traffic simultaneously.

Children and younger riders may have less experience judging vehicle speed and distance. This can make it harder to determine when it is safe to enter an intersection, particularly when larger vehicles are approaching. Visibility can also be affected by buildings, fences, landscaping, or parked vehicles.

Following traffic controls and maintaining awareness of surrounding traffic can help reduce the likelihood of roadway collisions. Safety education and familiarity with local traffic rules may also help riders make better decisions when traveling through busy intersections.
