Spokane, WA (June 24, 2026) – A 7-year-old child was injured after being struck by a vehicle on Sunday evening at an apartment complex on Spokane’s north side, leading to the driver’s arrest on a vehicular assault charge.

According to the Spokane Police Department, officers responded at approximately 7:30 p.m. on June 22 to an apartment complex in the 121 East Wedgewood area after receiving reports that a child had been hit by a vehicle.

When officers arrived, they found the 7-year-old suffering from apparent injuries related to the collision. Emergency medical personnel transported the child to a local hospital, where authorities said he was listed in stable condition. Investigators determined that the child had been riding a bicycle in the parking lot when the collision occurred.

The police said officers contacted the driver involved and quickly observed signs of impairment. During the investigation, authorities gathered information indicating recent drug use before the crash.

The driver, identified as 34-year-old Adrianna N. McConnell, was taken into custody and booked into the Spokane County Jail on one count of vehicular assault. The investigation remains ongoing.

We hope the injured child makes a full and speedy recovery.

What Happens When Impairment Is Suspected in Injury Crashes?

When law enforcement officers suspect a driver may be impaired following a collision, investigators typically conduct a detailed review of the circumstances surrounding the incident. This may include observations made at the scene, witness statements, field evaluations, and other evidence gathered during the investigation.

Crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians receive heightened scrutiny because of the increased risk of serious injuries to vulnerable road users. Investigators commonly examine vehicle movements, roadway conditions, and the actions of all parties involved before the collision occurred.

Evidence collected during the investigation helps authorities determine whether criminal charges are warranted and assists in establishing the factors that contributed to the crash.
