What Happens When Impairment Is Suspected in Injury Crashes?
When law enforcement officers suspect a driver may be impaired following a collision, investigators typically conduct a detailed review of the circumstances surrounding the incident. This may include observations made at the scene, witness statements, field evaluations, and other evidence gathered during the investigation.
Crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians receive heightened scrutiny because of the increased risk of serious injuries to vulnerable road users. Investigators commonly examine vehicle movements, roadway conditions, and the actions of all parties involved before the collision occurred.
Evidence collected during the investigation helps authorities determine whether criminal charges are warranted and assists in establishing the factors that contributed to the crash.
