Lansing, IL (July 15, 2026) – A 10-year-old girl lost her life after an apartment fire on the evening of Monday, July 13, in the 2900 block of Bernice Rd.
Emergency units were called to the two-story apartment building shortly after 7:30 p.m. after reports of heavy smoke and a person trapped inside. During a search of the building, Braelyn Stewart, 10, of Dolton, was located and removed from the apartment.
The child was taken to Munster Community Hospital before being transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago in critical condition. She later died from her injuries. A police officer also received treatment for smoke inhalation and was later released from the hospital. The fire was brought under control within about 30 minutes, and the official cause has not been released. The cause of the fire remains under review as more information becomes available.
