Manhattan, NY (August 6, 2026) – Fourteen people were hurt after a four-car vacuum train caught fire at the Astor Pl subway station in Manhattan early on Tuesday, August 4. The two-alarm fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m., filling the station and nearby streets with heavy smoke.
Eight transit workers and six firefighters were treated for injuries, most of which were related to smoke inhalation. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening. One transit worker was treated at the scene, while the other seven were taken to nearby hospitals and later released.
The smoke also affected two passenger subway trains. A Brooklyn-bound No. 4 train was evacuated, and a downtown No. 6 train bypassed Astor Pl because visibility was severely reduced. Power to the tracks was shut off, disrupting service on part of the Lexington Avenue Line until shortly after 6:30 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under review as investigators continue examining the damaged work train.
