Mineola, TX (June 16, 2026) – One man died on Sunday morning, June 14, after an 18-wheeler and a passenger vehicle were involved in a crash on U.S. Highway 80 in Wood County.
The accident happened around 10:47 a.m., about a half-mile west of Mineola. Officials said the 18-wheeler was traveling east when it hydroplaned on the wet road, entered the westbound lane, and collided with a 2017 Ford Fusion.
The Ford driver, identified as 45-year-old David Johnson of Grand Saline, died at the site. No other injuries were confirmed in the initial report on the wreck. A continued review is underway as investigators examine the factors surrounding the fatal roadway collision.
Our condolences go to Johnson’s family and friends during this difficult time.
How Wet Roads Can Affect Large Truck Control
Wet pavement can reduce traction for any vehicle, but large trucks need more time and space to slow or change direction. When water builds up between tires and the road, steering and braking can become much harder to control.
Weight can also affect how a truck moves during poor weather. A heavy vehicle may take longer to stop, while an empty or lightly loaded trailer can react differently during sudden movements. Tire tread, speed, rain intensity, and standing water all matter.
Hydroplaning can happen quickly, especially during or after heavy rain. Drivers may feel the vehicle drift or stop responding normally. Slower speeds, steady steering, and extra following distance can reduce risk when roads are slick.
