Medley, FL (June 16, 2026) – Two Florida Highway Patrol troopers were injured in a multi-vehicle collision on Florida’s Turnpike in Medley on Monday morning.
The collision happened around 10:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Northwest 106th Street. According to FHP, a silver FHP Chevy pickup truck towing a trailer was followed by a marked FHP cruiser when the trailer developed a flat tire.
Both vehicles pulled onto the emergency shoulder. FHP said a black Cadillac SUV left the roadway and struck the FHP cruiser, which then hit one trooper standing near the trailer. The second trooper was inside the cruiser and was also injured.
Traffic was affected in both directions as crews cleared the roadway. A medical helicopter landed on the highway to assist one of the injured troopers. Still, the investigation into the circumstances of the accident is continuing.
We are thinking of the injured troopers and wishing them a full recovery.
How Do Highway Shoulder Crashes Happen?
Highway shoulder crashes can occur when vehicles stop outside active travel lanes due to mechanical problems, emergencies, or other unexpected issues. Drivers approaching a stopped vehicle may have limited time to react, especially at higher speeds or in areas with heavy traffic.
Several factors can influence the risk of these collisions, including visibility, roadway design, driver attention, and traffic conditions. Vehicles stopped on the shoulder can be difficult to recognize quickly, particularly during busy travel periods. Safety practices such as moving away from active lanes when possible and remaining alert near stopped vehicles can help reduce risks for drivers and highway workers.
