Why Are School Bus Crashes Especially Concerning for Children?
School buses transport large numbers of children, making passenger safety especially important during roadway crashes. Children may be more vulnerable to injuries because of their size and seating position, while sudden impacts can cause passengers to be thrown or struck inside the vehicle. Properly designed seating and consistent use of available restraints can help reduce some risks.
Drivers traveling near school buses should remain alert and allow additional space when possible. Sudden stops, lane changes, or merging around a bus can create dangerous situations, particularly on busy freeways. Motorists should also watch for buses entering traffic and avoid distractions that could delay their reaction.
Freeway conditions can change quickly when a large vehicle such as a school bus or tractor-trailer becomes involved in a crash. Drivers approaching a collision should slow down, maintain a safe following distance, and be prepared for blocked or changing lanes. Giving emergency and roadside crews sufficient room can also help keep the area safer.
