How Can Drivers Stay Safe When Crashes Occur on Highways?
Highway crashes can create hazards for drivers even when the initial collision is relatively minor. Vehicles approaching a crash scene may encounter stopped traffic, disabled vehicles, debris, or sudden lane changes. Reducing speed early and increasing following distance can give motorists more time to respond.
Drivers should remain attentive when traffic begins slowing near an incident. Looking several vehicles ahead can help identify congestion before reaching the affected area. Motorists should also avoid abrupt lane changes and check mirrors and blind spots carefully before moving into another lane.
Large vehicles such as trucks and other commercial vehicles can make highway incidents more difficult to navigate. Drivers should provide extra space around stopped or slowing vehicles and remain alert for emergency or roadside crews. Staying focused and following posted traffic directions can help reduce the risk of a secondary crash.
