Chicago, IL (June 30, 2026) – Two people were fatally ejected, and four others were hurt after a car struck a fire hydrant at 47th and State streets in Bronzeville late on Sunday night, June 28. The wreck happened at approximately 11:50 p.m.
A 28-year-old man was driving a gray sedan eastbound on 47th Street when he lost control and hit the hydrant. A 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released.
Four passengers were injured in the collision. A 21-year-old woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. A 26-year-old man was treated at Stroger Hospital in fair condition, and a 23-year-old woman was treated at the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. A 17-year-old girl was treated and released at the scene in good condition.
The driver, the only person in the vehicle not hurt, was taken into custody. Charges are pending, and no formal charges have been announced as of this report. The accident remains under active investigation by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit.
