Colorado Springs, CO (September 1, 2026) – Two people died after a two-vehicle collision on Marksheffel Road south of East Gate Street.

The collision happened around 1:40 p.m. on Monday, August 31. Emergency units arrived to find two sedans involved, and Marksheffel Road was blocked in both directions near the Peterson Space Force Base East Gate.

A preliminary investigation found that a Toyota sedan was traveling southbound when it failed to navigate a curve and entered the northbound lane. The Toyota then struck a northbound Chevy sedan.

The two people inside the Chevy were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.

What Is Typically Reviewed After a Two-Vehicle Collision?

Investigators typically examine vehicle positions, roadway design, traffic signs, weather, and visibility when determining how a two-vehicle collision occurred. Skid marks, debris patterns, and vehicle damage can also provide information about the movements of the vehicles before and during the collision.

Witness statements may help establish which direction each vehicle was traveling and whether traffic conditions changed shortly before the vehicles came together. Vehicle safety systems and available onboard data may also provide useful details about speed, braking, and steering.

Medical records can help document the severity of reported injuries. Photos, video footage, and measurements from the roadway may further clarify the sequence of movements and help establish how the vehicles reached their final positions.
