Anchorage, AK (August 4, 2026) – Two people died after a 13-foot trench gave way while septic system work was underway in Delta Junction on Tuesday, August 2. The collapse happened at about 1:26 p.m. as the pair were working in the excavation.
The two people were identified as 68-year-old Paul Hebert and 71-year-old Jacquelyn Wilder. According to available information, Hebert was working as an independent contractor installing a septic tank when the trench caved in, burying both workers.
Emergency units worked to remove large amounts of dirt before carefully digging by hand to reach those trapped. Crews established safety boundaries before entering the excavation to avoid putting additional people at risk.
Hebert’s wife, Lori Meek, said her husband should be remembered for his deep Christian faith and his lifelong love of playing the guitar. She said his faith was central to his life and that he spent many years sharing his passion for music.
The cause of the trench collapse remains under investigation as more information is gathered.
