Southington, CT (September 10, 2026) – On Wednesday, September 9, two people were taken to separate hospitals after a multi-vehicle collision on I-84 (East and West) near Exit 31 in Southington. The vehicles were in the median just south of the Plainville town line.

The collision occurred at about 3:16 a.m. One vehicle ended up in a culvert, leaving two people needing extrication. Emergency units worked at the scene while establishing a rope system to remove those trapped safely.

One person was taken to St. Francis Hospital, while another was taken to New Britain General. The left and center lanes were closed in both directions, affecting eastbound traffic. The closures were expected to remain until the vehicles could be recovered.

The cause remains under investigation, and additional details may be released as the inquiry continues.

Our thoughts are with those victims hurt and their loved ones during their recovery.

What Should Drivers Know About Multi-Vehicle Highway Accidents?

When several vehicles are involved, investigators may review the actions of each driver before and after the first contact. Vehicle positions, damage patterns, roadway markings, photographs, and witness accounts can help establish how the sequence unfolded.

Highway incidents can also create additional risks because traffic continues moving near stopped vehicles and emergency crews. Lane closures may remain in place while damaged vehicles are removed and the roadway is made safe.

People involved in a serious highway accident should keep records of medical treatment, vehicle damage, photographs, and other information connected to the occurrence. Witness contact information can also be useful if questions later arise about what happened. Prompt medical evaluation is important when pain or other symptoms appear after a traffic accident, even if they are not immediately severe.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
