What Does Vehicle Extrication Mean After a Serious Crash?
Vehicle extrication is the process of safely removing people who cannot exit a damaged vehicle on their own. This situation can occur when doors become jammed, the vehicle’s structure is severely damaged, or occupants are unable to move due to injuries.
Specialized tools are usually used to create openings in a vehicle while minimizing additional risk to those inside. The process is carefully coordinated to protect occupants during removal and to allow medical personnel to begin treatment as quickly as possible.
Crashes requiring extrication frequently involve significant vehicle damage, though the severity of injuries can vary widely. The time required for removal depends on factors such as the vehicle’s condition, the occupants’ positions, and the complexity of the damage. Once those involved are safely removed, crews can continue clearing the roadway and documenting the collision.
