Why Can Traffic Delays Last for Hours After a Roadway Collision?
Traffic backups mostly continue long after damaged vehicles are removed from a roadway. Congestion can build quickly when a major route loses one or more travel lanes, especially during busy travel periods. Even a short interruption in traffic flow may create delays that take hours to clear.
Transportation experts sometimes refer to this as a ripple effect. Drivers slow down as they approach the affected section of road, causing vehicles behind them to reduce speed as well. On heavily traveled corridors, those slowdowns can spread for miles.
Road conditions, traffic volume, vehicle positioning, and cleanup needs can all influence how long delays remain in place. In some cases, normal traffic patterns do not return until well after the roadway has fully reopened.
