Ghent, NY (June 17, 2026) – A fatal two-vehicle crash on State Route 66 in Ghent claimed the life of a Chatham man on Monday afternoon, June 15.
According to the New York State Police, emergency units were dispatched at about 2:20 p.m. on Monday, June 16, following reports of a head-on collision involving a Honda and a Mazda. Investigators determined the Honda was traveling southbound on Route 66 when it crossed into the northbound lane and struck the Mazda.
Both drivers were taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment. Detectives said 81-year-old Jere Wrightsman, who was driving the Honda, later died from injuries received in the collision. The driver of the Mazda was also hospitalized, and their injuries were described as non-life-threatening. The NY State Police are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the crash.
