What Happens After a Multi-Vehicle Highway Crash?
After a multi-vehicle highway crash, investigators typically examine vehicle positions, roadway markings, and physical evidence left behind to better understand how the sequence of events unfolded. They may also review witness statements, photographs, and any available video footage from nearby cameras or dashcams.
Traffic flow, weather, visibility, and road surface conditions are usually documented as part of the review. When several vehicles are involved, investigators also work to determine how each vehicle became part of the chain of events. Information from vehicle data recorders, when available, can provide additional insight into speed, braking, and steering before the collision. As the review continues, updated findings may help explain the circumstances that led to the crash and whether any contributing factors were involved.
