How Can Drivers Reduce the Risk of Head-On Crashes?
Head-on crashes can produce significant forces because two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide with one another. Staying within the designated travel lane is essential, particularly on roads where opposing traffic is separated only by pavement markings. Remember to reduce speed when visibility is limited and remain alert for vehicles that may drift across the center line.
Fatigue, distraction, impairment, and sudden roadway hazards can affect a driver’s ability to maintain control. You should avoid operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol or other substances that can impair judgment or reaction time. Staying focused on the road and taking breaks during long trips can also help motorists maintain control.
Seat belts provide important protection during a crash by helping keep occupants properly positioned inside the vehicle. Make sure you and your passengers remain properly restrained on every trip. Maintaining a controlled speed and leaving adequate space from other vehicles can also provide more time to react when another driver makes an unexpected movement.
