How Can Following Distance Help Prevent Rear-End Crashes?
Following too closely can reduce the amount of time a driver has to react when traffic slows or a vehicle ahead stops unexpectedly. Maintaining several seconds of space between vehicles gives motorists more time to brake and can reduce the likelihood of a rear-end collision. Make sure to increase that distance when visibility or road conditions make stopping more difficult.
Looking beyond the vehicle immediately ahead can also help drivers recognize changes in traffic sooner. Brake lights, slowing vehicles, and congestion can provide early warnings that a driver may need to reduce speed. Staying focused on the roadway is especially important when traffic is moving at highway speeds.
Don’t forget to avoid distractions and never operate a vehicle while impaired. Alcohol can affect reaction time, judgment, coordination, and the ability to respond to sudden hazards. Staying sober and attentive, combined with a safe following distance, can help reduce the risk of crashes.
