How Can Red-Light Running Lead to Serious Intersection Crashes?
Running a red light can create a dangerous conflict because vehicles entering an intersection may cross directly into the path of traffic with a green signal. Drivers approaching a signal should be prepared for changing conditions and avoid accelerating simply because a light is about to change. Taking a moment to confirm that the intersection is clear can reduce the chance of a collision.
T-bone crashes can be especially dangerous because the sides of a vehicle generally provide less space between an occupant and the point of impact than the front or rear. Wearing a seat belt helps keep occupants properly positioned during a crash. Modern vehicles also use side-impact protection systems that can help reduce injury severity.
Drivers should remain alert even when they have a green light because another motorist may fail to obey a traffic signal. Checking for vehicles before proceeding and maintaining a controlled speed can provide more time to react. Avoiding distractions is particularly important when approaching busy intersections.
