What Makes Pedestrian Crossings on Busy Highways Dangerous?
Crossing a busy highway can be especially dangerous because vehicles travel at higher speeds and may have limited time to stop. Pedestrians who enter traffic outside designated crossings can also be difficult for drivers to see, particularly when vehicles block their view.
Drivers should watch carefully for people near travel lanes, exits, and intersections. Reducing speed and staying alert can give motorists more time to react when someone enters the roadway. Pedestrians should use marked crossings, traffic signals, or pedestrian bridges whenever available. Wearing visible clothing can also help drivers notice someone near the road, especially during low-light periods.
Multilane highways require extra caution because a person may need to cross several lanes of moving traffic. Both drivers and pedestrians can reduce the risk of serious injuries by remaining attentive and following posted traffic controls.
