Queens, NY (July 1, 2026) – Two people lost their lives, and 10 others were hurt after a bus overturned in a multi-vehicle collision late on Monday night on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 16 for Greenpoint Avenue. The bus was traveling westbound at about 11:45 p.m. when it struck two vehicles before overturning into the eastbound lanes, where it hit two more cars.

The deceased were identified as the bus driver and one passenger, although their names have not been released. Three people were listed in critical condition, while seven others sustained minor injuries. About 24 passengers aboard the bus were taken to Bellevue Hospital, New York-Presbyterian Queens, and Elmhurst Hospital Centre as a precaution.

Emergency units remained at the roadway for several hours while crews cleared the overturned bus and damaged vehicles, causing significant traffic delays. Drivers were seen attempting to turn around on the eastbound side because of the lengthy backup.

The factors that led to the wreck have not yet been determined. The cause of the collision is still under investigation. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.

What Happens After a Serious Bus Rollover Crash?

A bus rollover often requires a lengthy emergency response due to the number of passengers who may need medical evaluation. Hospitals may receive both people with visible injuries and others who are taken for observation, as symptoms from head, neck, or internal trauma do not always appear immediately.

Investigators generally review several factors after a rollover involving multiple vehicles. These can include vehicle speed, roadway conditions, mechanical performance, witness statements, surveillance footage, and damage patterns. Data from the bus and other vehicles may also help reconstruct the sequence of events. Traffic disruptions are common while large vehicles are removed and debris is cleared, especially on heavily traveled highways where multiple lanes are affected.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
