Bloomfield Township, MI (September 9, 2026) – Two 13-year-old boys were critically injured after the e-moto-type vehicle they were riding was struck by a pickup truck on Monday, September 7, in Bloomfield Township.
According to Bloomfield Township police, the boys were traveling west on the safety path along Hickory Grove shortly before noon when they entered a crosswalk at southbound Telegraph Road. A Ford F-250 struck the e-moto as the teens were crossing the roadway.
Both boys, who are Bloomfield Township residents, suffered critical injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals by the Bloomfield Township Fire Department. Police said the 35-year-old Rochester Hills man driving the pickup remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remained under investigation, with police saying additional information would be released as it became available.
Our thoughts are with both boys and their families during this difficult time. We hope both injured teens make a full and steady recovery.
What Should E-Moto and E-Bike Riders Know About Crosswalk Safety?
Small electric vehicles can be difficult for motorists to notice, particularly when they approach a roadway from a shared path or sidewalk. Riders should slow down before entering a crosswalk and ensure that approaching drivers have enough time to see and respond. Staying alert to traffic from both directions is especially important at intersections.
Crosswalks can also create situations where drivers and vulnerable road users have different expectations about who will proceed first. Motorists should scan carefully for people approaching a crossing and avoid entering an intersection without a clear view of the roadway. Reducing speed near paths and crossings provides more time to react when someone unexpectedly enters the road.
Young riders may need additional guidance when using electric bikes or similar vehicles near traffic. Wearing appropriate protective equipment, remaining visible, and following applicable roadway and path rules can reduce some risks. Riders should also avoid sudden movements and maintain control of the vehicle before entering areas where cars and pedestrians are present.
