Roanoke, IN (June 17, 2026) – A 20-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a collision involving a motorcycle and a car on Interstate 69 northbound near the southern Interstate 469 interchange late Monday night, June 15.
The Allen County Coroner responded to the scene around 10:40 p.m. and identified the motorcyclist as Payton James Thomas of Fort Wayne. According to a preliminary investigation, a car was passing other traffic when a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed rear-ended the vehicle. The motorcycle then entered the median and struck a cable barrier.
Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner determined his cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries from the crash and ruled the death accidental. The collision caused all northbound lanes of I-69 to close for more than four hours before reopening shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday. Our deepest condolences are with the family of Thomas.
What Investigators Review After a Motorcycle Crash on an Interstate
Interstate motorcycle crashes require investigators to examine speed, vehicle movement, and roadway conditions. Because motorcycles have a smaller profile than passenger vehicles, investigators may review visibility, traffic patterns, and the timing of each vehicle’s movement.
Officials typically analyze damage to both vehicles, roadway evidence, and the final locations where vehicles came to rest. Barriers, lane markings, and other highway features may also be reviewed to understand the sequence of events. Witness accounts and available video footage can provide additional details when determining how the crash developed. These findings help create a clearer picture of what happened before the collision.
