Why Rear-End Crashes Involving Heavy Equipment Can Be So Severe
Rear-end crashes involving construction or maintenance equipment often result in serious injuries because of the significant size and weight differences between the vehicles involved. Road graders, paving machines, and other heavy equipment are designed for work zones and typically have structures that sit much higher than passenger cars.
When a smaller vehicle strikes the rear of heavy machinery, the front portion of the car can experience extensive deformation. This can increase the risk of head, chest, and lower-body injuries for occupants. Visibility, changing traffic patterns, weather conditions, and driver distraction are among the factors commonly reviewed after these types of crashes.
In rural areas, heavy equipment may travel between work locations on public roads, creating situations where motorists encounter slower-moving machinery. Maintaining a safe following distance and remaining alert to changing roadway conditions can help reduce the likelihood of severe rear-end collisions involving large equipment.
