Berkeley County, SC (August 30, 2026) – Three first responders were injured Friday morning, August 28, following a crash and pursuit on eastbound Interstate 26 near College Park Road. The incident occurred while firefighters were working to clear the scene of an earlier collision.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, a firefighter was struck by a car while working at the scene. Deputies then pursued the vehicle after it left the area. The vehicle eventually stopped, but the suspect refused to get out. Two deputies broke the vehicle’s windows to remove the suspect and were injured by broken glass during the process. The firefighter’s condition was not immediately available.
Two ambulances were requested, and traffic was mostly blocked along Weber Boulevard until the vehicles were moved to the shoulder around 8 a.m. The incident remains under review as officials work to establish the full circumstances. A vehicle stopped on the shoulder can also create a hazard for responders and passing motorists. Giving emergency vehicles and personnel as much space as possible can help reduce the chance of another collision while roadway incidents are being cleared.
