Kitchen Fires in Rental Homes Affect Nearby Units
Kitchen fires can spread smoke quickly through a home, even when flames stay close to where the fire started. In rental buildings with multiple units, smoke may move into neighboring spaces and affect people who were not in the room where the fire began.
Minor burns and smoke inhalation both require medical attention because symptoms may change after the first emergency response. Breathing problems, coughing, and irritation may continue even after a person leaves the building.
A fire can also leave part of a home unsafe for residents. When a unit is condemned, people may need temporary housing while repairs and inspections are handled. Early reports usually focus on injuries, displacement, and the part of the building most affected.
