Fayette County, IA (July 29, 2026) – Three people were hurt and hospitalized after a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 3 and West Avenue in Fayette County on Monday afternoon, July 27. The collision happened at approximately 1:13 p.m., prompting emergency units to respond to the scene.

Investigators said a Dodge Ram 5500 pulling a trailer was traveling north on West Avenue when the driver failed to stop at a stop sign and yield to traffic on Highway 3. The truck then struck a westbound semi-truck and trailer, causing both vehicles to hit a Chevy Impala that was stopped at the intersection.

The Dodge Ram driver, a 20-year-old man, his 21-year-old passenger, and the 29-year-old semi-truck driver were taken to a hospital. The 28-year-old Impala driver was not hurt. All three vehicles were considered total losses.

We wish those injured a smooth and complete recovery.

How Multi-Vehicle Crashes Are Investigated

Crashes involving multiple vehicles require investigators to examine each driver’s actions and the sequence of impacts. They may review traffic signs, vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and damage patterns to determine how the collision developed. Witness statements and available footage can also help establish the events leading up to the crash.

When large trucks or trailers are involved, additional factors may be reviewed, including vehicle condition, cargo, and braking systems. Investigators may compare physical evidence from the scene with driver accounts to better understand the movements of each vehicle. This process helps create a complete timeline of the collision.
